I WAS YOUNG THEN

I Was Young Then.....

I was young then,

Inside my head

A battle had begun,

The fight

Much of inner soul,

Hidden,

A total of unseen,

Even I had no understanding,

Ashamed was I

Of that moment of appeasement,

Wishing, oh how I wish

I had done some more,

Only in time sense

They chorus forth,

It is a great healer

A smoothing balm to forget,

And now;

I am older, not wiser you see,

Cause I ask this pertinent question

OF WHY!

As one of those ones

Who’d survived that day,

I haven’t forgotten

Only memory pushed aside,

Still hidden in some dark space.

But ask a sailor

‘Bout fatal collision at sea,

When before you knew it

Your ship sunk under feet,

Then Neptune welcomed home

Seafarers of our Nation,

Tis pretty hard to forget

A mate to a watery grave,

Never to return

To sail another day at sea.

Only now as each February passes;

For many like I still battle,

And ask the question of why

Why wasn’t it ME!

I survived,

And then I remember;

Was it luck, providence

or good fortune?

Being a young sailor then,

Plucked from a oily grave,

To live,

To tell my side of the story,

‘Bout that fatal collision at sea.
