I Watched
I watched him say "I love you"
Didn't look like love to me
Looked like anger or repression
Or maybe jealousy.
I watched her say "I love you too"
But I don't think she felt it
Or maybe it was the fear in her eyes
A scaredness she couldn't quit.
I watched them board the train
A strange distance in their gait
It was like she wanted to make a decision
But needed him, would wait
For him to let her go ahead, to give her his permission
The way she caved and fell to him
A child being told to listen.
The train doors closed and they were gone
I watched it speed away
But I can't forget the fear in her eyes
Even to this day
I read once that love is just love
People confuse it with the hate
That comes from the other things, like
Fear, possession,
They think that that's their fate.
I wish I could've stopped them, or told her I understood it all
But I simply watched and stared
Until my train was called.
