I Wish This Could Work

Looking in the rearview mirror

It seems like the only place my eyes can focus

The dust kicked up obscures my vision

I don’t mind it, dry, magic, hocus-pocus

The freeway asphalt burning as I fly

Dark gray concrete, growling out white noise

I wanted to know, to get lost

In a bright sea of turquoise

Tears, knowing that what I can do

Will never, ever be enough

How fitting then, that you said

That I survive by never saying enough

Why can’t you see the same

Irony right in front of you

That the evergreen boy

Is pining away, his face is blue

But the other one

The girl that lives in the air

She’s distraught and frets

Over what already isn’t there

It’s nobody’s fault

Neither side wants this

But fingers point like flowers

Both of them want this

Because she deserves someone

Who can lie right to her face

And ask for help, for a hug

To put everything in its place

He deserves someone

That cheats and schemes

Every night at cards

So that they both win, and know what it means

To be held like a chain

Linked together by decision

And bound by a mutual respect

For the other’s lovely precision

In prescribing that medication

That vaccinates cynics

Optimistic embrace

Is a wonderful clinic

Especially for the heartbroken

Who deserve as much

As the lucky who have it

The love and such

But that which is sacred

Exists in the same place

As that intangible thing

The disgraceful embrace

That’s why we have

“Forbidden thoughts”

That bleed out his brain

And he thinks are caught

In the letters unsent

And the phrases unsaid

But holding it back

Turns him into a ghoul, an undead

Monstrosity, one that

Feels pity, that sad lie

Endearing, yet very

Light and very dry

So close to an oasis in fact

That many attempt to drown

Themselves in it

Pulling themselves further down

Into the pits of despair

The depths of sadness

A hunt for love

Only ending in madness

Not for the evergreen boy

Trees have roots and branches

He can pull himself out

Resist the avalanches

That are sure to follow

A broken heart

In the heart breaking

That’s the home of art

And I promise that

By the time this poem is through

I’ll be alright

And I’ll be over you.
