I Write
I write because I bare stories within me
Stories of toil, shame
Of roots and rain
Of broken parts
That paved the way to this present day
I write for the struggle we will win
For a life of justice to begin
I write for the day every man, Woman, Boy, and Girl
Will stand equally
No patriarchy
No superiority
For the day my African American mother
is treated as a white man’s equal in the self-proclaimed Land of the Free
And in every country beyond these seas
I write to declare light over darkness
Love over power
And truth over greed
I write for the day we will rise as one body
Every race, color, and creed
I write because when I do
Something within me frees the truth
And in that moment I find –
Treasure far beyond this life
