I Wrote You a Story

Dear N-

You asked me to write you a story

To make you the hero

To help you get the girl

So I wrote about our lives

How you don’t need to fight dragons

To save the princess

To save me

Only

I wasn’t the princess

You asked me to write you a story

And so I gave you what you wanted

Pretending I was ok with being the best friend

The one who cheers the hero on

The one who,

When the music plays,

And the credits roll,

Is always forgotten

You asked me to write you a story

And when you read it

I hope you can see what I didn’t write

What happens when the hero leaves with his girl

And the devoted friend is left alone

When I am left alone

With only fake smiles to hold me together

You asked me to write you a story

So I did

But it wasn’t a happy ending.

Love always,

S-
