There's a certain standard we must keep when we actually become "WE" A certain set of rules or basics is what I mean or WE can never be I chose not to melt or lose myself in you After trying that and failing those days are thru You are an individual and likewise so am I That alone should tell us that we won't always see eye to eye Someone once told me that love is a misunderstanding between two fools Love means many things to many people there's no real formula or tools Somewhere between us there was something of a spark Something that drew us together in our minds or in our hearts Before we get things started and our journey gets underway There's a few things we need to clear up some things we need to say Since I'm the one with the floor I guess I'll go first And be as honest as I can about my best points and my worst I have certain passions and I must guard them with a sense of greed Nothing about love is easy but I think I know what I need My writing and my music are my love they make my soul sing I can not allow emotions to cloud the joy my art can bring So please know up front that they will come before WE do And when I'm in the throes of creating whatever plans we had will be through That's not to say that you can't tag along And watch the magic that happens when I'm writing a poem or a song I just don't want to see anger or the look of pain on your face That would distort the gift I have besides hurting you is not okay And understand that we both have friends both of us have a past Giving someone else attention does not put either of us last Both of is are individuals with different interests and different needs Attending to those makes each of us grow it's not meant to make WE bleed I'm on a path and so are you and for some reason they have crossed Finding out if we can travel together should be a gain not a cost Compliment is the word and it's not easy to achieve But when it comes right down to it that is what I need My success or your success should bring joy not a threat And effort we give one another is a gift never a debt Score is for a card game or a game show on tv Love does not keep a tally there should never be a fee Consumption in a relationship is akin to devoured And becomes some other twisted emotion rank and sour When someone becomes obsessed then it becomes an addiction Everything I know about that tells me there's about to be some friction It's a fine fine very sharp line to walk as we sway and teeter Love has to be trickled out with reason it has to be closely metered It took me some years to figure out and my heart is full of scars But I have not lost faith I'm just shooting for the stars
