Icarus
Sometimes I wonder
How you can live your life falling.
Helicopters and hot air balloons stop by,
But you just
Keep
Falling.
You land on a ledge
Only to jump again
And Push away helping hands.
Its like you think
You can get up
By falling down.
Like gravity works the other way around.
And yet,
As I cling to these sheer cliffs,
You cover more ground
By going down.
And as you whip by, your eyes shine.
They shine!
How can you even see?
Is there something I’m missing?
Some peace you and Alice have found
Between the terror of the ground
And this whirlwind,
This never ending rabbit hole you call life.
Because you don’t just dance in the rain
You make it a parade
Until I start wishing someone would rain On mine,
So I could have your smile.
That razor edged shield
Both a challenge and an invitation,
A proclamation-
Your claim to the world
That they have none on you.
That no,
You are not falling;
You are learning to fly.
Because if you go down
For enough time
Eventually you’ll be going up.
Yes, you get up
By falling down
If you’re unafraid
To take the long way around.
Straight through the earth
And out the other side
Until you find
Inverted
Makes the prettiest view.
So thank you
For falling.
For showing me
Not who to be
But how to be
How to be something worth being
How to be spiraling and still living.
