If

if i could change the world
id start with my mother's joints
i'd water them with oil
making their movements easier
id lay them out in the sun
so they could grow stronger and
my mother’s pain would grow smaller

if i could change the world
i’d buy my father a car that doesn’t squeak
a car worthy of my father’s love
a car that wouldn’t strain his back
a car that would reflect my father:
dependable, strong, and fast

if i could change the world
i’d make my sisters’ hearts unbreakable
happiness would be their main emotion
their smiles would put the sun to shame
the only tears they’d cry would be of joy
they’d never know hurt
they’d never understand pain

if i could change the world
i would give my friends my eyes
so they could see what i see when i look at them
their beauty
their potential
their inspiration
they would never again doubt themselves
they’d know their true worth

if i could change the world
i’d start with me
Gandhi said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world”
well, i’m trying
maybe i’d start by capitalizing i when using the pronoun instead of my name
i need to be the change i wish to see in the world
well, I’m trying
