If anyone ask life taught me
I was born into a game called "SOCIETY SAYS" and typically playing a game for 17 years you would think I would have mastered it. I would know all the cheat codes, I would know how to win instantly. Well honestly since day one I been losing. Here's some of the rules: Don't cry too loud others will hear so in other words don't cry at all cause then they'll know your weakness. When you're in public smile even if you don't feel like it. If you are a black women talk as if you have no sense, pop your gum, wear clothes that are too tight, too short, and revealing, put the rainbow in your head, complain about everything, have a bunch of kids, don't work, be on Medicaid, have a bunch of baby daddies and put them on child support, live in section 8 with the flyest J's, but make sure you know how to throw down in the kitchen and if you don't everyone will think you are tryna "act white". If you are a black man have a mouth full of golds, sag your pants, have an odd job to pay your child support for the kids you don't even see, call your child every blue moon and tell them all about how you are gonna come get them and spoil them but never come, slut shame all your baby mamas, smoke weed, carry guns, run from the police, have nappy dreads/hair, wear humongous fake chains, share clothes with your homeboys, buy drinks for all the beautiful ladies in the club hoping you can take one to the crib do this and in society's eyes you are normal. If you are a white family have two kids a boy and a girl but you must get married first, cook every night but don't use any seasonings other than salt and pepper, have one car ohh and make sure it's a van so while your husbands at work as a wife you fulfill your motherly duty and take all the kids home after soccer practice, let your kids talk back, slam the doors, and come and go as they please, when you and your spouse get in an argument remain calm cause when night time comes you can't put him on the couch, let your kids go on play dates with the neighbors every weekend, oh and let the kids have ice cream before dinner maintain this lifestyle and anything different you are considered trailer park trash. For all the other races you are either black or white because for some reason race depends on your melanin not by your blood line. Society says since I'm tall I must play basketball and if I'm a girl then surely there's some sugar in my tank. If my parent is a preacher then certainly I'm a sneaky little whore. If you are overweight then you must be eating as much as cow. If you can't sit down without moving for a period of time then you able to focus on one set task for a short period of time then you have ADHD. Society says because I'm 50 and I don't dress like I have one foot in the grave and I'm not letting my grayness defeat me somehow I'm tryna be forever young. Because I am white I cannot dance and have absolutely no type of rhythm. Society says since you are Asian I'm going to copy every assignment from you because clearly you are smarter than I will ever be. Because you are Hispanic I choose not to say one word to you because you can't speak not a lick of English. Ohh and don't forget if she Chinese she eats rats, her teeth are brown and she works at the nail salon up the street. This is the life I was born in, that has a lot of rules spoken and unspoken but all are well aware of, and even in the most unconscious ways teaches you everything you need to know. I am everything I say I am and I fit nowhere in that widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing you call life.
