If Only I Were A Dictionary

If I were a dictionary I'd know all the right words My language would astound you as you flip through my pages matching my nouns with your foreign sounds But no. I am an instruction manual. Thrown into a dark empty drawer. Why bother looking at me? You got this covered. Right? But if I were a map and you my trusting adventurer I would take you all over the world Show you places that would take your breath away and you, would carry me everywhere because you know, my trails would never end Of course, I'm just the credits Standing here behind all the excitement No one cares about me, Well, except for those who benefit. I want to be music notes and you my musician Bringing you peace with every sweet strum Listening to me every night Because I, am your favorite song But no! I am the Sex-Ed. pamphlet! The one that makes people cringe The one people only look at for the pictures Then giggle and turn awy I want to be a jumbo sized coloring book And you, my messy five year old Filling my world with love in multicolor Admiring my crooked lines and crayon like smell I want to be a diary Filled with secrets, hopes, and dreams Everyone wants to read me And tries to crack me open But baby, my words are for your eyes only So that's it! I'm done! I'm tired of being a geometry textbook! Thrown in lockers, stuffed with papers all by some uncaring jerk who is never going to look at me anyway! Who is just going to toss me around until my binding bursts! And my words can teach no more. No more. I want to be a love letter Treasured by you more than anything else Looked at over and over again Just so you can believe its true If only I were a dictionary Then, I'd know what to do.
