If There's Truly Nothing
A poem.
Just one?
What then, can be done?
If there’s truly nothing new under the sun.
To a deaf past
scream “This is as far as we’ve come”
To the blind future whisper
“We’ve only begun”
To the present I ask
“Are we deaf, blind, and dumb?”
If there’s truly nothing new under the sun
With the time we’ve been given
To learn and to change
With hate, greed, and violence
Our minds are restrained.
The rich, the choice meat
The less fortunate, crumbs
If there’s truly nothing new under the sun
Forgive me my brothers
And sisters alike
Another glum poet
With grievance and gripe
Of course it’s not all,
Just the most part of some
If there’s truly nothing new under the sun
We’re shaking and trembling
See so much resembling
The ages of old
We claim we’re transcending
But with our new science
And with our new tools
When it comes to each other
We are very much fools
Discoveries still shocking
Breakthroughs still do stun
If there’s truly nothing new under the sun
If matter is constant
And just rearranged
Humans are people how ever
Their framed
Ideas are ancient
Just now they become
Supposed origins
In order, they’re "one"
If there’s truly nothing new under the sun
