If You Could Read My Mind
As I get into the car, I notice the song playing on the radio
It's the famous words by Gordon Lightfoot sang by Johnny Cash
"If you could read my mind"
As I sat in the car listening to the song, I began thinking
What if someone could read my mind
What if someone heard and tried to decipher the mad rambling,
The endless whispers, and the sea of thoughts
Forever floating in my brain
If someone could read my mind and explain to others
All the ways I feel when I say "I'm Fine"
Even though I never am
I would pay big money
If someone could explain what goes through my mind on the daily
Because most of the time
I don't even know what's going on in MY OWN BRAIN
And the worst part?
Trying to tell an ignorant 8th-grade boy how I feel,
When a teacher sends someone to check on me
After I run out of the classroom
In a full-blown panic attack
When I still don't know why it happened
But no one can read minds
And even if someone could, they probably couldn't read mine
So as I stare out the window, I wonder
If there isn't anyone who can read my mind for me
How can I figure out how to read it myself?

▾ This Poem's Voice
Your Poem's Voice
Deeply personal introspection about mental state, concrete autobiographical details
Multiple layered ideas: confusion, panic, isolation, self-awareness compressed densely
Predominantly anxious and melancholic despite moments of curiosity and self-reflection
Builds intensity through repetition and panic attack revelation; conversational but escalating
Approximately 28 lines; falls in 16-30 range
Some metaphors (sea of thoughts, reading minds) mixed with direct declarative language
Pure lyric internal voice; introspective first-person reflection with minimal narrative shift
