If You Were Here
If you were here there would be no widow or fatherless children.
no need for tears.
unwanted attention from strangers.
the need for black clothes to be stored in the closet
or the need to fill up boxes with memories of who you were.
if you were here mom would smile more often.
although you'd both argue about petty things,
like whose turn it is to wash the dishes.
you'd both hug it out and tell each other "I love you".
Mom wouldn't feel like the world was against her.
If you were here my brother, your son, would spend more time with the family
he would talk to us and join us on family events.
he'd feel like he would have someone to talk to.
a person who could understand what he is going through.
if you were you'd get to see you little girl grow up.
see her get her first job.
see her sit behind the driver's wheel scared and confused.
you'd be able to get her through her first heartbreak.
in which you'd later swear that no one would hurt your little girl again.
if you here I would say "Sorry".
sorry for everything I caused you.
sorry for not being there.
sorry for not saying good-bye.
