If You're Anything Like Me

If you’re anything like me,

You bite your nails,

And talk a lot when you’re nervous.

Your immense love for those around you

Blinds you, depriving you of what you really need…

But you need to stop.

If you’re anything like me,

You put so much pressure on yourself to be something better.

Holding your breath, you close your eyes tight

Worrying about the past, present, and future,

Your feelings keep you trapped in a cage and you can’t escape.

Say goodbye to your acquiescent nature…

If life gets too good now,

It scares you.

If you’re anything like me,

You never wanted to think this much,

Overflowing thought bubbles and words squeezed into journals

Didn’t want to confront the you you aren’t sure exists anymore

For fear she used to be better off....

But you must face it.

If you’re anything like me,

You’ve built yourself a castle

Carrying the heavy bricks and laying them in a line.

But then you think it doesn’t belong to you, that the castle isn’t yours

Accidentally made of a delicate sand instead of stone

And you feel as though at any moment the ocean will take it away.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together….

You are strong enough.

If you’re anything like me,

There’s a wrestling match taking place in your mind

A fight between what you think to be true and what actually is

And you’ll scrutinize every action, every thought

Each deceiving conclusion strangles you,

Its hands glued to the throttle of disillusionment.

You confine yourself into your own private little bubble….

But this is where you meet yourself.

If you’re anything like me,

You’ve grown to hate your indecisiveness

And to love your humility.

You’re terrible at lying,

Because your face never figured out how to do it correctly.

Your anxiety tries to get the best of you

You get knocked down sometimes….

But you keep getting back up.

If you’re anything like me,

You feel stuck between who you are, what you want to be

And also what you should be.
The barrier raised between your head and your heart

Makes you constantly apologize for the things that make you who you are,

But you are a force as strong and strange as any element of nature….

Don’t worry.

If you’re anything like me,

You look for rainbows when it rains, and for stars when it’s dark.

Seeing the good in everyone else,

You put your faith into others, always seeing the beauty in them;

You believe in the idea of kaleidoscopes, filled with broken bits and pieces,

Looking through them,

You still see something beautiful….

You are that way a little bit.

If you’re anything like me,

Whenever you hear the voice of your love,

You feel as though anything that’s wrong shifts to right

Overwhelmed with warmth and acceptance,

You watch your family and friends with pride….

Later on you will thank your lucky stars for bringing such beautiful people into your life.

If you’re anything like me,
I’m sorry….

But everything is going to be okay.
