Imagery of Love

I had it all wrong from the start

How could I be so naive to believe that what you did to me was out of love?

That you hurt me because you love me

That you made me hate my friends and family because you love me

I did not know then, but I know now

“Because I love you,” became your punny catchphrase

Every time you yelled at me or you hit me, you would say “it’s because I love you”

And like an idiot I believed it, I smiled, I thought your love was real

I was so blinded by my love for you that I had no idea what I got myself into

But soon it came to me that this wasn’t love but at the same time it wasn’t hate

I couldn’t figure it out, but I didn’t wait for the answer to come flying in front of me

Instead I left and went through the motions and experienced hate and experienced love

And it’s so funny because it all happened at the same time little by little

I loved someone and he loved me too

He loved me for who I was and told me that everyday

To him, it didn’t matter who I was not, he loved me all the same

He gave me all he could offer because he loved me

He gave me love, he gave me compassion, he gave me truth

His eyes twinkled every time he looked at me and the light never faded

It was like looking into an eternal flame

The flames could never die just as our love never would

The flames burned in our hearts and kept us close

We could never be apart as long as that flame burned

That flame is what kept us going time and time again

He always told me how he was feeling and together we could work it out

He was always ready to lend a shoulder for me to cry on and was always ready to make it better even if he couldn't

With him, I knew what love truly was and every “I Love You” was always sincere

It wasn’t something to be thrown around, it was something to be cherished

We cherished all the time we spent together

Every kiss, every laugh, every hug, every whisper, every touch, and every stare

Was always in our memories, it bonded us like glue, it could never be torn apart

And every second of love I experienced with him, I experienced hate for you

You showed me everything that love wasn’t

My time spent with you was a lesson for me

It allowed me to understand what true love is

And I know that when I was with you I experienced blind love

Our love was in ashes from the very moment it began

Or at least when I thought it did

Our fake love was toxic and poisoned me into submission

But now it’s all different, I’m not blind anymore

Someone else was able to alight the flame in my heart and my body

I knew I had it all wrong from the start

And it was all because of you, it was all because of what you did to me

But now I’m letting go of you and my memories of you, it’s not worth it anymore

You're not worth it anymore

I’m saying goodbye and I’m moving on

And it’s only because I love you

Now you know how it feels.
