Imagine

Imagine
you live
in a land
devoid of
freedom
and that
human rights
are merely
a dream.
Imagine
too,
that
you could be
taken
into custody
without reason
at any time,
anywhere.
But let us
suppose
you'd be allowed
one tiny bundle
thrown together
in haste
to carry into
the unknown.
Would you think
sentimentally
and need photographs,
your favorite book,
some small memento
to connect you with
your life as it was?
Or would you
be purely practical-
food, extra socks
and underwear,
warm clothes,
only the " bare
necessities."
Would you realize
that
actually
what is truly important
lies within
and cannot be
taken from you
- it endures.
Your thoughts and hopes,
memories and knowledge-
but could these
be
would these
be
enough
to
sustain you?
