Impermeable

Cities of asphalt

and rivers of cement,

the burning blacktop

sticky with tar and oil.

Footsteps pound into unforgiving stone

Monsters of gasoline blare and roar.

And when we fall

And when it’s time to return to the ground

Blood can’t seep into soil

Bones can’t rest within the dirt

Bodies can’t quiet

can’t settle

can’t decay

only riot.
