The Indispensable Past

If all of life were pleasure and gain

without any thought of strife or of pain

and no-one did anything remotely insane

what kind of life would it be?

If I didn't have fears to try to overcome

If I never worried about looking dumb

And everyone followed that "rule of thumb"

What would have become of me?

Without all the heartaches and hits and the hurt

Without being knocked down and thrown to the dirt

If I wasn't such a big introvert

There would be no me to see

All the scuffs and the scrapes that I've gotten into

Taught me I can be anything if I just "go and do"

So take that away, and I could not make it through!

My trials have made me "me"
