Inevitable

I believe it’s difficult

Accepting the feeling

Because you have no idea

When the words:

“I don’t love you anymore”

Will slip from the lips

That would kiss your pain away

You will never know until

It hits you

You can try to prepare yourself

You can try to know how to act

Or to respond

You can try your hardest and still fall

But then they reassure you

Make you feel on top of the world

Take you out

In the middle of the night

And count every star

Until the sun rises

In hopes of beating time

From getting the better of us

Or they can count every freckle

Upon your rosy cheeks

And praise every inch of your skin

As if every limb was a blessing from God

They can make you feel loved

But then

When you’re not ready

When you’re unprepared

They hit you

With the bomb that ricochets

“I don’t love you”

Or

“You’re not what I used to want”

They can do that

They can take your eyes

That were full of hopes

And dreams of a better life

Fill them with the deepest shade of darkness

Extracting every, tiny

Bit of light that was left

Tear you apart

Limb from limb

Break your heart

Pulling apart

The one piece of yourself

You kept sacred

Tearing it

Muscle from muscle

Vein from vein

Everything that makes you, you

Is shattered in the hands that

Used to draw secrets on

Your sleeping skin

And by someone you put

Your whole self into

The person who filled

Your conscience with promises

Of endless love

And promises of keeping you safe

And that’s what terrifies me

It’s not just the person

It’s something

It’s someone of the inevitable

Will love me and destroy me

And it’ll appear out of nowhere

And I know I won’t be able to stop it.
