Infectious

My life has been a love affair…
…with antibiotics.
Amoxicillin, bacterin, ampicillian,
you name it.
If it treats:
bronchitis, ear infections, UTIs, or strep,
I’ve taken it.
Unlike most bodies,
mine harbors bacteria,
providing it with a sanctuary
from the realities of a harsh,
and unforgiving world.
My love affair started just after birth,
my dying and expanding kidneys,
attracting bacteria,
like angels to a plane crash.
Never before had they done this surgery.
My weak immune system frightened them,
so amoxicillin they gave me.
Protecting me
like a father guards his fragile daughter.
When intruders infiltrated my system,
they saved me.
When doctors give me
amoxicillin now,
I smile,
and like when greeting an old friend,
remember all the days,
spent in sickness and in health.
