Infinite
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Most poems should rhyme,
and this one will too.
Catch what I did there?
I’m clever, you see,
You expected a trick,
But I’m quite contradictory.
When you flip open a dictionary,
Clever’s not just what I am,
but reliable and hot-tempered
or maybe just an amalgam
of colors and shapes,
sights and sounds,
tastes and smells,
it’s enough to make your head spin ‘round.
One word can’t sum me up,
Not me, not you, not anyone.
Rip out pages of a dictionary,
and maybe then we’ll have some fun.
Garrulous, contumacious,
efficacious and effulgent.
Arcadian, tenacious,
fecund and indulgent.
Perceptive, adroit,
Scrupulous and well-read.
Some days insightful,
some days just whacked in the head.
You tried to pigeonhole me,
and that just won’t do.
So reach for the dictionary,
I know you want to.
People don’t come in containers.
Not in boxes or bags.
We don’t come with stickers.
We don’t come with tags.
We don’t come with labels!
Certainly not in one word.
We’re as endless as space.
To think less is absurd.
But for the purpose of the prompt,
I suppose I’ll have to pin it.
If I were just one word,
it would have to infinite.
