Inheritance

I am the infamous son

firstborn of danger and fun

raised in tender care and sanctuary

at the playground running a Hail Mary

blacktop with woodchips under swingsets

rock a flat-top and nike kicks for race bets

and when the sun sets I watch the moon glow

some nights I would creep out the backdoor slow

cause God bless the moon and God bless me,

and that's the first rhyme I learned from mommy

The eldest of four, responsible

let's all go explore, unstoppable

cool Autumn breeze at our backs

as we walked those railroad tracks

hometown heroes in our heart

everyone knew our parents start
