Innocence

I used to think that we got to choose the color of our skin,

Different shades and tones,

And whether or not we could be thick or thin.

Till one day I saw my dearest friend, my sibling,

Turn three different colors.

Bright black, blue, and purple lined her physique.

And I saw her struggle to hide the truth –

But then I knew that she was in too deep,

And I was simply too innocent to understand.
