Innocence

I use to be such a sweet and caring thing

Never a harmful thought, my joy extended to those around me

I lived and I loved completely free from the adult sensation of worry

Yet at someone unknown point this carefree nature was torn from me like the cutting of an umbilical cord

Without the nutrients of innocence’s womb I became withered and callous

Those who turned to me for comfort found themselves like a child who comes home and eagerly pours themselves a glass of milk, only to find it has turned. Turned into something bitter and sickly, impossible to choke down.

The reality of how dark human nature can truly be tied a chain around my heart and too late I realized there was an anchor on the other end.

Ever downward sunk my disposition but I was as the prey of the blue whale, stunned by piercing noise.

What good does breathing do when you awake at the bottom of the ocean with miles of sea pressing down upon your lung?
