Insecure

Dear Insecurities,

You have caused me a lot of pain in the past. You never existed until the first day of kindergarten when I was called ugly for being black. You will no longer triumph over my happiness. I will no longer look in the mirror wishing I could change something about my features because of your poisonous tongue whispering in my ear. We have grown closer as the years went by. Your words more powerful than ever in high school. I would try not to listen to you but was forced to believe that you were correct when you said no one would accept me because I was black. I could find no foundation in my skin color and believed you when you said I was to dark. I am writing this to let you know that this will be our last time in contact. I have realized that being black is not a burden but a gift. Thanks to my friends I am more confident than ever. I now realize that the only part of me that was ugly was you.

Farewell
