Insomnia

The sleep river is familiar but distant. The sounds of running water that I know so well are foreign. Try as I may, my body is at rest but my mind teems with city lights. Insomnia is a feeling I can't put away and even though my body has quit my mind hurtles forward.

Powerful expression. Always let poetry fill your life. Keep expressing your heart.

I think it is really interesting how you relate the sense of sleeping to a calm river and in contrast, the awakened state of our minds to a city that constantly lit up. Are you being literal in this poem about what Insomnia is, or are you using Insomnia as a metaphor for wanting to act a certain way but being told by society that you must "hurtle forward" in a certain direction? As I read it I thought it could go both ways. Have you ever written an idyll poem? Find out how and more in the Resources section.
