Instant Coffee

She had seen this play before

He wanted now and nothing more.

That made it kind of easy to let him have his way . No use pretending about the coming day .

She didn’t want to have that argument of hope and dissension in her brain . It’s so much easier to just feel the pain .

That made it easy to put him to the side when the sun slit the cracks .

The light bouncing off the mirror .

Her smoking hand shielding bloodshot eyes .

He was certain , in his hide. Yeah , he’d thought it would be different . Thing is , he really just wanted to escape from inside the grey .

She poured the coffee and felt his eyes. There was no attempt to disguise. It wasn’t angry but far from right ... status quo in confused delight.

Why’d that happen she thought once more. Hell , why bother to find reason . True love just may be out of season for a while .

Lovers and denial , it only takes a while ... to build it all up and watch it crash right down . Unless you listen close , you’ll never catch a sound.

Smoking a Lucky Strike,  his conscience  sore . He’d always thought better of himself . He’d always wished for a whole lot more .

Sometimes it goes that way.. what  more can be said. They both clinked mugs and averted eyes . A smile would have been too sweet a prize .

The words couldn’t come , only a shrug. He’d succumbed to his devils drug. Wanting to belong if just for a minute . He had no whole heart to put in it .

An awkward moment , a half hearted hug.

Looking inward , she had hoped for more.

Why’d that happen she thought once more . Hell , why bother with a reason . True loves just out of season for a while .

She went back to work , put him on the shelf. He stuck his thumb out on highway 12 . Promised to quit lying to himself .

Lovers and denial , it only takes a while ... to build it all up and watch it crash right down . Unless you listen close , you’ll never catch a sound.
