Invisible
Who am I?
I am not a stone in a river,
A grain of sand on the beach,
Or a single strand of hair on anyone head.
Not the wind that blows through autumn leaves,
A ripple on a still glass surface,
Or a whisper only heard by its announcer.
I can walk through a forest and hear nothing,
Not the sound of my steps, or the breaths I take.
Come upon this lake. See the ripples, hear the wind.
I look at the surface, a mirror, showing what is visible.
My face, not shown before me, not looking back.
I can walk through a busy city and watch.
For I cannot take part in the rush and noise.
Walk through this crowd. Voices heard, conversations spoken.
I do not speak; I do not make conversation.
Nothing said to me. Only observing the world around.
I can walk through a school and be no one.
Not popular nor outcast; idiot nor genius.
Walk through this hallway. Jokes exchanged, laughter had.
I go through, not being bumped into or waved hello to.
My existence unnoticed, unknown, not important.
I can go through life without recognition.
I cannot see the mark left by my existence.
Walk in these shoes. Know the ignorance, feel the pain.
I keep going, hoping for change, getting none.
The world continues to improve, however still, I remain,
Invisible.
