iridescent

Iridescent: adjective, showing luminous colors that seem to change when seen from different angles.

When I see a crowd of people

I see iridescence

When you look with a closed mind

All you see is a blur of movement

Constantly changing as you move throughout its maze

When we were young

We all learned the golden rule

Treat others how you want to be treated

So we can open our minds to others

But with age, something outside of ourselves drives us away from this glowing sentiment

Closing our minds

And as we move further away

We lose the ability to see

Iridescence

I see a conflicting society

Where thriving and deprived minds both walk around me

Thriving minds like myself keep a distance from

It

Studying its contents

This thing almost sucks deprived minds into its grasps

but the deprived minds accept it

This vacuum

They get the individuality sucked out of them

In search of a telltale unity

All walking towards an unreachable goal

Where selfishness thrives and empathy shunned

As I watch them walk through the constantly changing maze of people they call home

I just wished they could just open up their minds

So they can see the iridescent light

Of all individuals

In its beauty

Achieving this

Will help light their path

Not through the maze of constant change

But away

To a place where people are seen for who they are

And not what they do or how much they make

Or who they kiss at night

they see a human being

Swarming with divinity

But this isn't your fairy tale happy ending

This problem is not easily solved

As equality for all is more complex as you dig deeper

Teenagers hide who they are in fear of the enemy

An enemy full of hatred

Sending teens over edges of buildings

An enemy without mercy

Causing kids to cry tears the same way their blood runs from their wrists

An enemy that takes love at its core

Causing teens to be thrown out of homes

All in the name of a belief caused by fear that makes people think its ok to send their offspring out in the world with nothing but sadness all because of one word

gay

An enemy that taints our vision

We see brown as a dangerous color

As it walked behind us

An enemy that insights violence

As innocent men walking downstairs gets shot and killed

Just because of the color of their skin

As if white is the purest color so anything below that is trash

We think we are worthy of being the best

When we kill our brothers and sisters just because of beliefs created by deprived minds

Racism

An enemy that values similarity

As young boys and girls seek to find their true identity this enemy

Forces them into hiding because a boy might say

I'm a girl

This enemy

Walks among us

Right under our noses without knowing it

this enemy

Is us

Our fear of difference

We, Humans, treat their own species like no other does

it Causes teens to fly like an eagle off of buildings while they are trapped in bird cages

It causes gunshots to ring out as they find their target

Because they don't feel “safe” even if being safe

Means killing an innocent black man for no reason other than his skin tone

We Humans cause teens to turn their bodies into cages as they don't feel right in their own skin they try to break free

Only to be greeted by hate and discrimination

But there are other aspects of us

That can be our saving grace

Empathy, kindness, charity

If we can just learn to take the key to the lock and open up our emotions

Blow the dust away from our minds

But we can't solve this problem in one day

We need to stand up

Get involved

Walk hand in hand to fight

Cut the cancer that grows in our society every day

We have done it before

Gay marriage

Only possible by us

Ending segregation

Only possible by we

We the hero can make a positive change

Flick the switch

Shine the light bright on our society

purify our streets

And rid us of this enemy

Because if you like it or not

To some people getting up in the morning is a battle

So you need to fight for all the people too scared to fight for themselves

Even if you are fighting by yourself and your lost

Just know

That this step that you have taken

Can help America become a better safer place

For all of our neighbors.
