Irony of Loving You

I loved you first with all I had,
You loved me too, or so you said.
But your kind of love never matched mine,
Parallel hearts, never aligned.

You taught me love, or so I thought,
But what lessons were you ever taught?
How can you teach what you do not know,
and still plant seeds that endlessly grow?

I puzzle over how you learned,
Who shaped the way your fire burned?
Your mother gone, your walls grown tall,
Brief stories, fragments, I know them all.

You lost her young, the first you loved,
She left this world; you closed above.
Now loving’s risk you won’t allow,
Afraid to lose, you don’t know how.

She left everyone, not just you,
But when you left, it was just “us two.”
You didn’t leave the world behind,
Only me, now you're hard to find.

I watch you laugh with all your friends,
While here I sit, my patience bends.
I hear your voice, not meant for me,
Your world is closed, I lost the key.

Each day your face, I have to see,
and pretend that you mean nothing to me.
Do you know the ache inside
of loving you, and having to hide?

I gave you all that I could give,
Changed myself, forgot to live.
I tried to fit your perfect mold,
But love can’t be shaped, bought, or sold.

You say you’ll treat the next one right,
but why not me, who stayed the night?

You notice when my texts are cold,
Worry when my silence grows old.
You care, but not the way I need,
The kind of love that makes hearts bleed.

I became quiet, pretty, sweet,
Traded my comfort for looks you’d keep.
Skipped out, got in trouble too,
Did anything to stay with you.

I’d shape myself to fit your dream,
Break myself at every seam.
But isn’t that the tragic part?
I’m too easy, so you break my heart.

You never loved like how I do,
And no one else will love you, too.
I gave you my body, soul, and mind,
But I lost myself every time.

I tried to teach you that love is more,
not just flesh, but something pure.
But you just wanted skin, not soul,
Left me empty, never whole.

If all I did could not suffice,
Then loving you exacts a price.
I told myself that I'd move on,
Said goodbye, thought you’d be gone.

But here’s the irony, the twisted truth:
Last night we talked, as we always do.
Months have passed, still we speak,
Old wounds open, new ones leak.

I didn’t move on, didn’t say goodbye,
I just kept the pain alive, and let love lie.
You don’t see the little things anymore,
You just want what you wanted before.

You came back for my body, not my heart,
Ignored the rest, tore me apart.
We’re caught in a cycle, repeating pain,
I lose, you leave, then come back again.

The irony is loud, impossible to miss,
I crave your love, you crave a kiss.
I wish I’d left, but here I stay,
Love’s lesson learned the hardest way.

So when your life ends, and memories remain,
I hope you remember love mixed with pain.
Because I still love you, that’s the cost,
In the irony of loving, I am lost.
