The Island (One Thing I Need)
I was stranded on an island
Once, not very long ago
As the days crawled by
And the nights were filled with darkness
I woke up on an island of woe
Not able to comprehend how I came to be
On the shores of sorrow and loneliness
But I quickly realized I was stranded
On the island of despair
Days dragged into weeks and then into months
Desperately trying to build myself a boat
I struggled
Eventually I realized the truth about my island
There was no way off any time soon
So I decided to do the best I could
Kept myself busy, built a ramshackle house
On that lonely little island
Every so often there would be a storm
My shelter didn't do me much good
I told myself to wait it out
On the island, in the raging storm
I would try to comfort myself
Writing letters, desperately trying to reach out
I needed the help of a friend
Once or twice, the island was lit up
By the glow of a friendly ship on the horizon
Every time, I waited and watched
Hoping to be rescued, but never was
That little island weighed time down
So I waited...and waited some more
One day, ever so slowly the horizon brightened
And the island began to disappear
Finally, the island no longer holds my mind hostage
And I am free to live in an oasis of purpose
