Isn't You, Is
To the one with eyes reflecting the far-off mountains:
Everything you want is here
Everything you need is here, in the touch
of the earth against the sole of your shoes
and your weight upon the bicycle-seat.
That reflection in
the creek along the dirt road
Features shifting in pebble-eddies
is you
isn't you
In time it will become you
like wax dripping from a flame
a canyon curved by water
peeling off a layer of dust and grime
seeing beneath above
within, without
until you look again into the sky-reflecting waters
blue-layered over silt and stone
and recognize these eyes
looking back
Gaze at the sky
Hold it in memory
Brush grasses with striding legs
upwards to the top of the hill
Breathe it all in
For me
For us
later you will need it
this closeness with the earth
for when you are far from it
this mountain-kissed sky
for when nothing breaks the horizon-line
Lift those eyes
that hold you
but not you
Paint everything behind blue irises
kick the bike-stand down
stand
and breathe
This is our place
when you look again into your reflection
see it sitting there,
see you
not you
but what will become you
what you will become
And let it grow out of you like
a flower in spring
