It Changed Me

On day one of sixth grade

When she asked me to write

I didn’t know that it would open up my mind

And start to heal my soul.

Having written many poems now, years later

I realize that it was to help me cope

With the darkness I felt inside.

There was no name for it yet

Or at least I hadn’t recognized what it truly was.

And so poetry helped me identify the beast in the corner

Before it got too hungry.

Having grown up with my head in a snowglobe,

My mind safe and warm, but not accessable,

Poetry helped me to crack the glass.

Now my mind is free of the glass,

And successfully running from the monster.

All because I decided to write

On day one of sixth grade
