It Felt Like God
Dear glasses,
Do you remember the day we got to the Philippines?
I’ll bet you do – you saw everything I did, but I just felt dazed by it all.
Do you remember the shocked Filipinos that first Sunday at church when they saw a 6’8” missionary?
I’d be surprised if you didn’t – my height was rare even back home.
Do you remember the doubt in my eyes as we talked to strangers about God?
Probably not – You hung limp in my hands after a hard day’s work as I started to break under the pressure.
Do you remember the day my faith shattered?
Maybe not – you were on my bed while I plead with God and wept.
Do you remember watching me during those months of agony as I preached about a God I wasn’t sure I believed in?
Perhaps not – you were on my desk as I pored through scripture every night, searching for a glimmer of hope.
Did you understand how deeply I needed to know?
I don’t think you did.
Do you remember seeing me kneel and ask a God in Heaven if it was all true?
Possibly not – you were on the ground when His answer of peace swept the doubt from my mind.
Do you remember the smile that spread across my face as I came to truly love the beliefs I had doubted?
I imagine you might – you used to only see that kind of smile from me when I created music.
Do you remember reflecting the light that came into my eyes that day?
I’m sure you do – it filled me completely and shone through you whenever I shared my newfound joy.
Do you remember watching that same light come into others as they read scripture and believed?
I would hope you do – it seemed brighter to me than noonday sun.
Do you know what that light felt like, glasses?
It felt like God.
