It Hurt

She realized that it could not work

When he hit her

And it hurt

And when tears ran astray

On a young, weary face

There was something deep inside

That had dried beneath a fiery gaze

After ages and ages of being left alone

Festering in the shadow of a dark heart

Once watered and sprouting, in part

Because of a love that let them meet

The seed, planted by an unweary man

Who knew not what fruits this tree would bear

And would not be present to harvest what it bore

After a tearing pain settled in his chest

Unless he could see the future, he was doomed to live there

In tomorrow, not today, dreading morning light

As the moonshine soothed his pains in the dark

All this to create a single seed

For a single tree he could never see

The tree that loved, then thought it loved

The tree that forgot what it was to love

It punched and kicked and used

And created a realization

That could only be found in her bruise

When he looked her in the eye

And said 'Because I love you'

And it hit her

And it hurt
