It Should Feel Like Love
Love shouldn’t be a sacrifice.
Love shouldn’t be a trade of freedom,
because those bone that caress you
can quickly become a prison.
Those words that escape his lips
should not soak into your veins
and constrict your breathing.
They should not sew your lips together with fear.
His callused hand that holds the bottle
should not strike fear into your tired soul.
Because you know that hand will sting
after he finds that you forgot to take out the trash.
Because I love you should not be an excuse.
It should be a statement that
makes you feel safe,
not confused.
Because I love you belongs between two equals.
When his smooth fingertips graze your jaw
they should leave a feeling of bliss,
because you know he is looking inside you
and recognizing a complex human.
A mosaic.
Because I love you should not be scary,
because when you trust that he won’t
be there just for your body,
but be there because he is in love with your passion
it’s easier for you to fall.
Because I love you
should be a vow that runs
through the marrow of your bones.
An elixir that means to heal.
Because I love you
should feel like love.
