It's ok

My mom held my hand, kissed my cheek and she smiled

She stayed up through the night for her ‘precious child’

‘It’s ok to be different’, she’d whisper into my ear

‘It’s ok to be scared, just find strength in your fear’.

I was scared of the doctors, the needles, the tests.

I trusted my mom, that it was all for the best.

None of my friends, went through something like that

With wires attached to my head like a hat.

Time passed, tests ended, no more needles or pills.

No more shuddering, shaking, like I had the chills.

No more looks from the teachers or the kids at my school

No more wishing for friends to think I was cool

I’m stronger because of the journey I took

I learned more than I ever could learn from a book

It’s ok to be different, I’ve learned over the years

It’s ok to be scared, just find strength in my fears.
