Jake
As I sat and I pondered, as all poets do
I wondered what style of poetry might interest you
Would it be a haiku, a couplet, or ballad
Would an “Ode to Myself”, be one that was valid
Would you prefer verse that is sweet and quite lyrical
Or prose that is heavy, perhaps even satirical
Should my words paint a picture of pastures of green
Or should they make you see something that’s never been seen
Do I address issues of social unease
Poverty, politics, crime, and disease
Fairies and unicorns, war and despair
Which words will I use, what thoughts will I share
And then i remembered, this isn’t a test
It is truly my choice how I meet your request
My words must have meaning, for me, more than you
With that as my compass, I now know what to do
I will let you peek into the world I call, “Jake”
To let you know me is a risk I must take
It will be simple, and I’ll keep it loose
Somewhat of a tribute, to the late Dr. Seuss…
Jake, I Am
I am Jake, and I am smart
I like to eat, and I laugh when I fart fart
I love to sing, my feet sure stink
I’m fairly funny, or so I think
I’m very tall, and run quite fast
I am the youngest, so the best was last
I work really hard, but play hard too
I give my best to all I do
Life is short, but life is fun
I feel like it has just begun
I like me and that’s pretty cool
Please help me to afford my school
