Just Because they Recognize Me

I’m told I will never belong

I speak and act equally as they

I’m told I should go back home

Home? But this is my home

Countless opportunities will be lost

All lost to a nine digit number

And a green plastic card

I’m told I don’t belong

I need a green plastic card

Efforts, and trails,

Sleeping late, early awake

Mastering a new tongue’

Exhausting trail in order to excel

But being called a Nerd

“You’re just a waste of time” they say

And I become a stranger back “home”

I’m told I’m criminal

I’m told I don’t belong

I’m told I’m a Nerd

Whispers and musings

She’s the daughter of so and so

Whispers and musings

She’ll surely have a baby by 16

She’s their daughter…college bound, oh what a ridicule

I’m told I will never belong

I’m told I’m criminal

I’m told I need a green plastic card

I’m told I’m a nerd

I’m told I’m their daughter

I’m told, But I know

They act like they know me

Just based on their own assumptions

They act like they know me

Without reading my story

Just because they recognize me

I’m told I don’t belong

I’ve lived past seven years with them

I’m told I’m a criminal

But I was ten when I crossed the river

I’m told I need a green plastic card

But it’s not like I haven’t tried

I’m told I’m a nerd

But bullies is what they are

I’m told I’m their daughter

But what’s so wrong?

I’m proud to be their daughter

I’m told, I’m told.

But I know

I know

But you don’t

So don’t act like you know me

You will never recognize my story
