Just Eyes

Growin’ up in Alabama… Toughest place I ever saw I never understood why ma and paw always hated dem dark folks so much I could see the hatred drippin’ from they mouths like that warm cinnamon goo that comes off ma’s award winnin’ cinnamon buns. My folks and all they friends once went into town carryin’ pitchforks and torches, just to scare off one poor negro family I never understood why What did these people do to deserve this. The just looked a little funny that’s all. It made me mad to see all that. not one person ever stopped to explain this shit that was happenin’ all around and then I felt a fire in me. I knew what I had to do. Maybe I couldn’t hear Its true I could speak no sounds either But my eyes work just fine and I could fight for them dark folks if nobody else would.
