Just A Girl

Just A Girl

By Sundai Barnard

I was just a girl

Wandering through this world

I had friends

But I felt so alone

I had no one to hold

No one to care for

They told me

You have to fight your demons

Before you try to wish them away

But I was just a kid

Full of hopes and dreams

To be something better

To make my father proud

But how could I make him proud

When I kept on disappointing him

He wants me to be better

Better than he was

Better than I was

I tried to be better

But all you saw were my sins

My wrongs

My faults

I tried to fight my demons

I kept wishing them away

But I was just a teen

Trying to make people like me

Trying too hard

But not hard enough

How do you find that balance?

That way to be confident

No matter what they say

But they’re bullies

Telling you to try new things

Things you don’t want to do

But do anyway

I kept wishing away

Wishing to find the strength

To beat my demons away

But I was outnumbered

Everyone says

It’s just a phase

You’ll be ok

Will I be ok?

My demons are getting stronger

Trying to take my will away

Will I let them stay?

My demons are closing in

Will I get stronger?

The light gets harder to see

But there is a ray

I run that way

Willing it to stay

We get a glimpse

We see a way

A way to stay

A way to be stronger

To be better

I’m just a girl

Trying to fit in this world

It may not always go my way

But still I stay

Stay in the light

If there is a will

There is a way

Hope is always there

To stay at your side

You’re not alone

There’s always one

Who wants you to stay

You’ll see one day

That your life

Was meant to be this way
