Just the Same

Laying quiet on his bed, He opens listless, lazy eyes. To his world, all is dead; Every day, It will stay Just the same. Slowly shuffling to the mirror, He wonders why he rose again. Things are useless—pointless—here; Every day, He will stay Just the same. Rounding traffic, honking shock He freezes at the sound of it. They have found a laughing-stock; Every day, They will stay Just the same. Knocking on his office door— He makes more money to his joy— This is what he’s living for Every day, This will stay Just the same. But one day, When he’s old, He will die, And the money that he made Will be a wretch’s lonely fate Watching, hoping it will grow. But who am to see it go Simpering on interest? I am not an atheist.
