"Just the Two of Us"
I am so used to giving and never receiving.
I give and give and give until I have nothing left
And even then, I give some more.
But no matter what I do,
Everyone always leaves.
You're the only exception.
I don’t quite know how I ended up here, with you
Laying side by side in your bed, under the warmth of a blanket.
Your hands hold my body close to yours
My fingers are running through your hair
We both have things to do today, but neither of us want to move.
This… This is our silent “I love you”.
I am damaged, there’s no question
Though we all have scars to bear.
You came along, helped me realize that I’m not beyond repair
You gave me hope, made me stronger.
I no longer need a lifeline, though you’re my favorite medicine.
We’re still on your bed, our limbs tangled into a knot
Our eyes are closed, the silence comfortable.
The world is locked outside,
It’s just the two of us in here.
My hand finds yours, your lips find mine.
When I met you, you were lost
Trying to navigate your way through life.
You said when your eyes met mine,
You felt like you had finally found your way home.
We worked together, made ourselves whole, and completed each other.
Your fingertips trace patterns on my thighs
You pepper kisses along my neck and shoulders
I lazily rub your back.
We both dare to check the time
It’s almost noon.
I tell you that I love you
You just look at me and smile.
You stand, announcing you’re going to make us pancakes
I offer to make coffee
You tell me to relax, tell me that you’ll be the cook this morning.
I ask you why.
You know I mean so much more than why you’re making me breakfast
I mean, why did you take a chance on me, trust your precious heart to me?
You lean over, taking my face in your hands.
You look into my eyes and whisper:
“Because I love you”
