Katie's Poetic History

It was 2010

When I first took out my pen.

There’s a first time for everything, I said.

I wrote about my favorite animal

A giraffe, it made no sense.

It was 2011

When I wrote again

Forced to write about the war

It was torture,

Yet somehow I enjoyed it in the end.

It was 2013

When I wrote by myself.

Trying to be a rapper, I was fooling myself.

It was no good,

But writing relaxed me.

It was 2014

When I refused to write.

Kids in schooled laughed.

They said it wasn’t cool, that it was weird.

I hid the literature under my bed.

It was 2015

When I wrote about him.

About someone I knew,

Someone I didn’t.

He’s family they say, as they hide from him.

It’s now 2016

And I’m writing this.

How silly I was to not realize

Poetry is something that helps me keep sane,

My pen and notebook are always just within reach,

Willing and hopeful to listen to me.
