Keep Ya Heads Up
Living in America for a girl today is a lot like living in a jungle,
Except it’s not survival of the fittest,
It’s survival of the prettiest.
And girls have been taught since day one
That their worth is not measured
By the size of our minds,
But the size of our thighs;
And not by how we see ourselves,
But how we are seen by guys.
And that
Needs to change.
Girls have been hypnotized
By billboards and signs
That we aren’t worth anybody’s time
If we fall outside of the range of what society deems beautiful.
And what’s truly sad is we believe it
Skipping meals and over-training 3 times a day
Just to achieve it-
That impossible and unobtainable image of beauty
What I would change is the way
Our little girls are raised
Teach them that beautiful thoughts
Are more important than looking hot.
Teach them that the size of their jeans
Is not equivalent to the size of their hearts.
If I could change one thing I would change the perception of beauty.
All of these perceived notions of aesthetics and cosmetics
Blind us, keeping us from seeing the truth.
Girls, keep ya heads up,
Beauty has nothing to do with looks,
Beauty is how you act, how you carry yourself, and what you do.
