kid

As i was growing up i was afraid of the dark

but when i got out of that darkness

i realized i wasn’t a kid anymore

once i stepped forth in the real world i didn’t know how to escape

left and right i saw bodies on the floor

something that became normal to me

another brother shot and killed on these streets

but what could i have done as a teen?

the sound of gunshots became so typical to me

it was like hearing the same song over and over again

nothing new really

what i didn’t realize as a kid

was how my voice mattered

i aspire to speak for the people who didn’t have the opportunity

before being shot and killed by their own family
