Kiddie Pool

Little feet wade on the steps

Little hand grabs big hand

My fragile body jumps back onto land

I sit on a float

Pushed around the shallow pool

I laugh, followed by a stream of drool

Drunken sunlight, I rest

Smell of sunscreen, sound of delight

I wince at the light

My first swim lesson

I lean on my kickboard

And away I soared

My parents watch from the distance

No hands to hold, but in their sight I stay

I swim for the first time, kicking away

Pizza is what we ordered

I was too big for the kids menu now

That night I ate like a cow

I moved on from the kiddie pool

Yet still, I longed to be even more free

I was young and stupid, now I see

Going to the lake with friends

No parents in sight

Freedom was there, and we had took flight

Yet somewhere along the way

As much fun as we had

We all felt sad

Trips to the lake

Transitioned to the sea

I still can't believe

I know how a current feels

The power to take away family

To leave your hands feeling clammy

No one there to save you

You have yourself and friends

But even friendships meet their ends

The course of life

is like a raging river

which is enough to give you shivers

You never know what curves may bring

And you can't change the past

What's gone is gone, and what's come has passed
