I stood at my kingdom, knights guarding, bridges up,
Climbed underneath the most steadfast fixture,
Covered myself with the flaws of my past, and disguised
The truthfulness of my own picture

I blocked the road, and warped the signs,
Changed my hair so it was not mine, set the clocks
A minute past nine though it was,
The wrong time

You beat my knights with your cunning speed,
And swam the swampy depths of the moat,
Stored clean water in what seemed to be
A small, makeshift boat

You took a sword to that steadfast fixture,
And I sighed, a sigh of defeat,
You cleansed me with that pool of water,
Making sure to cover the deep cuts that overtook my feet

You peered at me with a peculiar face
One a curious man would make,
And I nodded, just a nod,
And you understood that that nod meant,
In most ways,
That I was spent

For years, you have loved every part of my being,
Enough love to swallow all of the sea,
And it took you years to realize
I built the walls, guarded the knights, and hid,
Not to protect myself from you,
But to protect you,
From me
