Knives and Matches

It’s only been a few months

but in these short winter days,

early morning road trips,

and cell phone calls

we found each other

through two parts betrayal

and one part new beginnings.

I was there when her sky ripped open

and watched her faith in love

fall in pieces around her feet.

we picked up the scraps of her life

and put them back together.

She has a way with me

and I have a way with her

we are knives and matches

two wild things,

glinting and burning

with hearts

of metal and ashes.

I don’t know what it will feel like

to leave part of my soul on the East Coast

but I do know

that every second away from her

feels like a wasted opportunity

When I am with her

we’re two kids with no fear

and big ideas

but it is no more than a transient peace.

I say,

“You’ll fit in my suitcase.”

She just laughs

but I don’t think she knows

that I really won't be okay without her

I smile

she smiles back

and we bravely brace

for the end
