Knowing Without Knowing

They see me, yet

they do not see me

They hear me, yet

they do not hear me

They know me, yet

they do not know me

I am but a number in this world

A face in the crowd

A name on a roster

A girl in their class

It is easy to feel like nothing, like nobody

when I think of the magnitude of the universe

Yet I am something, someone

If they saw me, then

they'd see the girl who grew up too fast

If they heard me, then

they'd hear the girl who's got one foot in the past

If they knew me, then

they'd know the girl who's been to hell and back
